What is your question?

After Hazrat Isa a.s, were there prophets or only guardians/vicigerents?

Answer

Our belief is that there is no time devoid of a divine guide, however, the guide is not necessarily a prophet, he could be a successor. As for the time period between Isa (p) and the seal of prophets Mohammad (pbuh&hp), some Muslim theologians believe that there were prophets, others believe that there were no prophets but successors.

What is your question?

Is it permissible to play chess, especially since some people play it for the sake of developing their minds or for entertainment and for betting? What if the opponent is a computer that uses symbols and shapes instead of the actual instruments/pieces of the game?

Answer

Playing chess is absolutely forbidden, even without betting, because it is gambling [based on Islamic textual evidence], and there is no difference in whether it is with the usual instruments, through a computer, or if there are two players. If one of the two players is the computer, then it must be avoided based on obligatory precaution.

What is your question?

Some doctors consider brain death to be the measure of a person’s actual death; even if the heart does not stop beating immediately, they conclude that it will inevitably stop after a while. What is the religious view on this matter? What if the patient remains in such a state under artificial respiration for a long time that it costs the patient’s family an exorbitant amount of money which they are unable to pay? Moreover, if they are unable to pay the treatment bills, healthcare and services will be withdrawn from the patient and result in their death?

Answer

The criterion for applying the term “dead” to a person insofar as the application of religious laws is concerned is when the average person considers them dead based on common view (urf). Yet, this criterion is not established based on what the question states. Moreover, if the patient's family is not able to provide the treatment fees, then others must provide them, such that everyone who can afford it must contribute to sustaining the life of a Muslim. Similarly, a Muslim doctor must also refrain from turning off the life support equipment from the patient, and it will not harm them [they will not be held responsible] if someone else does.

What is the ruling on this?

Answer

There is no problem in doing so provided that it does not entail severe harm.

What is your question?

As part of coexistence and good relations with non-Muslims, sometimes we may receive invitations from them for some of their occasions, for example, graduation ceremonies, Christmas, or New Year’s holidays. Is it permissible to congratulate non-Muslims on their occasions and holidays? Is it permissible to attend their celebrations or parties, which are usually not without singing, music, and unlawful drinks?

Answer

It is permissible to congratulate the people of the book (Christians and Jews), as well as other non-Muslims, on the occasions that they celebrate, such as New Year's Day, Christmas, and Easter. As for attending these gatherings and remaining silent about the unlawful acts committed there, it may be considered an endorsement and even encouragement for committing such unlawful acts. Additionally, forbidding the wrong when its conditions are fulfilled necessitates doing what is necessary to deter it, just as it is prohibited to eat at a table on which alcohol is served, and also to just sit at such a table based on obligatory precaution.
