Does khums have to be paid on gold?

What are our obligations with respect to paying khums on gold? Do I need to pay for any gold not worn in a year. I have also heard it only applies to gold in solid form (e.g., gold coin). Also, how do I determine how much to pay?

1. Gold that was part of a dowry is exempt from khums.

2. Gold that was purchased with money from which khums has already been paid is exempt from khums.

3. Gold that suits the woman’s shan or standard of living as determined in Islam, which was received as a gift or purchased with money from which khums has not been paid but was worn for some time during the year (even if it was left unused in the second year) is exempt from khums.

4. Gold that suits the woman’s shan or standard of living as determined in Islam, which was received as a gift or purchased with money from which khums has not been paid, and was worn periodically during the year in which it was received, but was then unused for the remainder of the first year, then khums must be paid on it based on obligatory precaution.

5. Gold that suits the woman’s shan or standard of living as determined in Islam, which was received as a gift or purchased with money from which khums has not been paid, and was not worn at all, then khums must be paid on it.
