What is Jumuah?

Friday, best known as Jumuah (Arabic: جُمُعَة), is the last day of the week, in the Islamic calendar. Jumuah is a sacred day, and due to its sanctity, the value of our deeds multiply. Acts of worship are emphasized on this day, such as extra recommended prayers, seeking forgiveness, and paying charity. Additionally, on this day, it is recommended that one maintain hygiene, apply perfume, and meet others in their best appearance. However, the main highlight of this day that makes Friday unique is the Friday prayer, better known as Salatul-Jumuah (Arabic: صَلاةُ الجُمُعَة), as depicted in the following verse:

O you who believe! When the call is made for prayer on Congregation Day, hasten to the remembrance of God, and drop all business. That is better for you, if you only knew (62:9).”

The Friday prayer offers a host of blessings and opportunities spiritually and socially. Muslims gather together for prayer and listen to the religious sermon as well as meet fellow friends, family, and believers in the community.
