Can I perform temporary marriage with a girl over the phone so we can speak in a religiously legitimate manner?
If the girl is independent in her personal affairs and she is a virgin (meaning that she has never been married before), she must take permission from her religious guardian (father or paternal grandfather) based on obligatory precaution. In this case (i.e., obligatory precaution), she can refer to another jurist (marja) who allows an independent girl to conduct temporary marriage without the permission of her religious guardian. However, the other jurist must be the next most learned after the jurist she emulates. If she is not a virgin (i.e., previously married) then permission is not required.
