On July 14, 2018, the 30th of Shawwal 1439 A.H., The Unity Islamic Center of Cleveland invited Sayyid M.B. Kashmiri, chairman of I.M.A.M and representative of Ayatullah Sayyid al-Sistani in North America to be the keynote speaker for a fundraising dinner. The purpose of the event was to purchase a new building to accommodate the growing community. During his keynote address, Sayyid Kashmiri took inspiration from the eighteenth verse of Surah al-Tawbah, which says “Only those who believed in God and the Day of Judgment, performed their prayers, paid the religious tax, and had fear of God alone have the right to establish and patronize the mosque of God so that perhaps they will have the right guidance.”  He then talked about the five characteristics of those who are successful in building houses of worship.

Sayyid Kashmiri also went onto explain the importance of having religious educational institutions to fulfill the requirements of religion as well as to safeguard our religious identity and preserve our culture. He then presented the khums authorization (ijaza) letter to the chairman of the center before informing the community about the significance of their religious dues and financial obligations.

He concluded by reminding the community of the importance of proper khums management and its necessity for serving Islamic centers of the next generation.
