Announcement Concerning:

The Crescent Moon of the Month of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1444 A.H. (v2)

(Note: The first announcement was sent about 40 minutes after sunset in San Diego on Sunday. The committee then received reports later confirming the sighting occurred and issued a new statement. The committee asks believers to submit reports without delay in the future.)

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that sighting of the crescent moon was confirmed by the naked eye in Phoenix, Arizona and San Diego, California at sunset on Sunday, June 18th, 2023. 

Therefore, based on the multiplicity of horizons ruling, the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1444 A.H. will be on:

  • Monday, June 19th, 2023, for all the cities extending from Miami, Florida; and passing through Atlanta, Georgia; Arkansas City, Kansas; to Seattle, Washington.
  • Tuesday, June 20th, 2023, for the remaining Eastern and Northern regions of North America.

We ask God, the Most High, to accept your fasting, grant success in performing good deeds, and to hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

The Moon-Sighting Committee was established during the seventh annual conference of The Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America, and has been providing monthly sighting announcements to the North American Shia Muslim communities since 2007.
