What is your question?

Recently, I started working for a retirement home (Senior Home) in the United States. My job is to take residents to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, play games with them, perform exercises, clean, etc. But, I am having some doubts in my mind about this type of work (i.e. its permissibility) and because the residents are not Muslims. Is it permissible? Is my income halal?

Answer

The work is considered lawful, as long as you avoid unlawful interactions with the opposite gender such as shaking their hands and looking at their private parts etc.

What is your question?

In Islam, which is considered better in terms of reward and blessings, to hold a majlis or celebration for the birth of a m’asoom in my house or in the Islamic center?

Answer

Holding gatherings for the remembrance of Ahlulbayt (pbut) is among the desired practices in the eyes of God, hence, high reward is hoped for those who hold these gatherings whether in the Islamic center or in their home. However, holding the program at the Islamic center might be preferred. Further, if you choose to hold the gathering at your home you should choose a time that does not coincide with the program time at the Islamic center to avoid any impact on its attendance and activities.

What is your question?

Is Kombucha tea haram to consume?

Answer

A number of reports indicate that the tea in question, is made and prepared in several forms, hence it is difficult to apply one ruling to all forms, which is with respect to the presence of alcohol quantity, or the fact that it may be considered beer (fuq’a). As such, if the amount of alcohol is more than 3 percent it is considered an intoxicant drink and must be avoided. Moreover, if it contains beer (fuq’a), it is rendered impure (najis) based on obligatory precaution as per his eminence al-Sayyid al-Sistani. Therefore, we strongly advise the believers to avoid such tea. Unless it is confirmed that it contains no beer and the percentage of alcohol is less than 3 percent.

What is your question?

I recently entered into a temporary marriage and it was agreed that I would pay the dowry at a later date. Can the wife change the dowry to something else from what was previously agreed upon? For example can the dowry be changed from jewelry to cash?

Answer

The wife is entitled to the dowry specified in the contract (i.e. at the time of the marriage) and at the time stipulated for it to be given, any changes to the agreement require approval by both the husband and the wife. If both agree, then the jewelry that was specified as a dowry in the marriage contract can be given as cash [instead] at the present exchange value.
