Imam Hasan’s Tearful Farewell

“I only cry for two things…”

These profound words were spoken by Imam Hasan (p) on his deathbed, as narrated in Al-Kafi.

As death approached Imam Hasan (p), he began to cry. Those around him, astonished by his tears, questioned him, “O son of the Messenger of God, how could you cry considering your particular position with the Messenger of God and all he (pbuh&hp) said about you? And you have performed the Hajj on foot 20 times and divided your wealth three times, even giving away one shoe from a pair?”

In response, the Imam (p) said, “I only cry for two reasons: the horror of when things are made known [after death and on the Day of Judgment] and being separated from loved ones.”

Reflecting upon this hadith, we recognize a delicate balance in a believer’s relationship with God: a harmonious blend of hope and fear. Despite his devotion and subservience to the Creator, Imam Hasan (p) still humbles himself in front of God. This fear, far from being negative, is a profound respect for God’s authority and justice.

Concurrently, a believer must maintain a sense of hope in God’s mercy. This is demonstrated by the Imam’s ritualistic acts of worship, like the Hajj pilgrimage and charity. Those closest in proximity to God do not perform their deeds out of fear of God but rather as a manifestation of love. This, in turn, creates a sense of spiritual resilience, fosters gratitude, and guides us toward contentment.

Ultimately, Imam Hasan’s wisdom encourages a balanced spiritual journey; it does not suffice that we fall to one emotion over the other, but rather by coupling fear and hope with action, we forge a powerful path toward our Creator, driven by reverence, love, and aspiration.
