Updated – June 30th, 2022:

An Update Concerning:

The Crescent Moon of the Month of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1443 A.H.

Dear believers in the southern and western states of the United States of America,

Assalamu Alaykum.

The announcement below was released last night after moonset in Southern California. Around an hour after that, news of moon-sightings by the naked eye in San Diego started to circulate causing many believers to inquire whether the beginning of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah had changed.

The crescent committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America would like to state that for those who are content with the above-mentioned sightings and are located in the orange curve in this diagram from Charlotte (NC),  going towards St. Louis (MO), Omaha (NE), to Seattle (WA), Thursday, June 30th, 2022 will be the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1443 A.H.

For the rest of North America, Friday, July 1st, will be the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

We ask everyone who is interested in serving this monthly service for more cooperation and coordination in the future to avoid such incidents and to avoid putting the community in confusion. “… Cooperate in piety and God-wariness…” [Quran 5:2].

To the respected believers in North America,

Peace be upon you.

The Moon-Sighting Committee of the Council of Shia Muslim Scholars of North America announces that Friday, July 1st, 2022 will be the first day of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah, 1443 A.H. for the entire region of North America.

This determination is based on the fact that there were no verified sightings of the crescent moon by the naked eye at sunset on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 in any region of North America, particularly the southern and western states. Thus, Thursday, June 30th, 2022 will be the last day of the month of Dhu al-Qidah.

We ask God, the Most High, for success in performing good deeds, the safe return of all pilgrims (hujjaj) to their towns, and to hasten the Return of Our Master, Imam Mahdi (p).

On behalf of the Crescent Committee,
Sayyid M. Rizvi, General-Secretary
