When a ‘Small Sin’ Breaks a Great Bond
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, once said, “O Abu Dharr! Do not look at the smallness of the sin; rather, consider the One whom you have disobeyed.”
[Al-Tabrasi, Makarim al-Akhlaq, p. 459-471]
This short yet powerful saying changes how we see our actions. Often, we excuse ourselves by saying, “It is only a small mistake.” We convince ourselves that one careless glance, one hurtful word, or one moment of neglect does not matter. Yet the Messenger of God reminds us that sin is never about size. It is about the greatness of the One we turn away from when we commit it.
The Illusion of Small Sins
A single drop of poison is small, yet it can still harm the body. In the same way, even what we call a minor sin leaves a trace upon the soul. It may not be visible to others, but deep within, it chips away at our closeness to God. A careless action today can grow into a habit tomorrow, and habits shape the direction of our lives.
Who Are We Disobeying?
When we sin, we are not simply breaking a rule. We are turning our backs on the One who created us, who sustains us, who knows our every need and hears every whisper of our hearts. Imagine disobeying someone who has given you everything—your breath, your health, your family, your future. The action may feel light, but its true weight lies in Whom it is directed against.
The Quiet Consequences
The effects of sin are often subtle. A lie may weaken our trust in God. An unkind word may darken our heart. Slowly, the sweetness of prayer fades. Supplication feels heavy on the tongue. The heart becomes restless. This is not punishment. It is the natural effect of covering the soul with layers of disobedience, until it no longer shines with the light of remembrance.
The Hope of Returning
The beauty of God’s mercy is that it is never too late to return. No matter how heavy the burden of sin may feel, His door is always open. One sincere tear can wash away years of mistakes. One heartfelt prayer of repentance can polish the heart until it gleams again. God loves the servant who returns to Him, and He promises to forgive, to heal, and to draw that soul near once more.
A Moment of Reflection
Pause for a moment. Reflect on the actions you may have brushed aside as “small.” Ask yourself: Am I willing to turn my back on the One who has never turned His back on me? Allow this thought to soften your heart and lead you to repentance.
The true seriousness of sin lies not in its size, but in the Majesty of the One we disobey. And the true hope lies in knowing that the One we disobey is also the Most Merciful, the Most Loving, always awaiting our return.
