Can I break my promise for a greater need?

I have promised to give an amount of money on certain date to people who will build a mosque. During the building process I discovered another person needs that money to do a crucial surgery. Is it permissible to break my promise and give the money to the person in purpose to save his life?

Saving a person’s life is a priority, therefore you can notify the people who are in the process of building the mosque that you are not able to contribute due to needing the money to save a person’s life.
