Dr. Seyed Masoud Noori, I.M.A.M.’s representative in the UN, has recently contributed an article on the goals of shari‘a and sustainability to An Anthology of Contemporary Ecotheology, Philosophy and Eco-Justice Practices: ECOTHEE Volume 7, which was published by the Science and Research Centre Koper, Annales ZRS, Slovenia.

The article, entitled “Protecting the Environment through Highlighting the Maqāṣid al-Sharī‘a Doctrine and SDCs Connection,” was originally presented at the 7th International Conference on Ecological Theology and Environmental Ethics, which took place on October 26-29, 2022 at the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Greece.

In this research, I.M.A.M.’s UN representative argues that the idea of the specific objectives of shari‘a—namely, the protection of faith, life, mind and intellect, lineage, and property—can be applied to contemporary concerns, such as:

  • Environmental protection
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Environmental pollution and devastation

He then matches the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) listed in the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with goals from shari‘a, demonstrating that there is great compatibility between the two categories of values. Read the entire article by clicking here.
