What Happens to Blessings We Ignore?
Among the many luminous teachings of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (p), one pierces the heart with its simplicity and depth, “The blessing that you are not thankful for is like the sin that is not forgiven” [Bihar al-anwar, vol. 75, p. 365.]
These words are not just a reminder, they are a wake-up call. How many gifts do we live with daily and never acknowledge? The ability to breathe without pain. A quiet moment of peace. The voice of a loved one. The chance to pray, to speak, to think. Yet often, we move through life numb to these mercies — until they’re taken away.
Imam al-Jawad (p) isn’t just urging us to say “thank you” more often. He’s guiding us to live in awareness, to see each moment as a gift, each breath as a trust, and each joy as a whisper of God’s mercy.
This is a reminder that the One who gave it is near. And the most fitting response to every gift — big or small — is to turn our hearts toward Him who gave it, in thanks.
When we fail to do so, the blessing fades into the background of our lives. But when we thank God, we honor the Giver, deepen our connection, and protect our souls from the darkness of ingratitude.
Gratitude is more than a feeling, it’s a form of worship. And every blessing needs thanks.
