1. Details about the situation

Hadi is performing Hajj with his wife during a particularly crowded season.

As they approach the Kaaba to begin their tawaf, he notices how dense the crowd is. Pilgrims are tightly packed, and security barriers have been placed, guiding people further out from the Kaaba. 

They try to move closer, but to no avail. He worries about being separated from his wife or causing harm in the crowd.

He knows that tawaf is supposed to be between the Kaaba and Maqam Ibrahim… but what if they physically can’t get there?

2. Background

In the rites of Hajj and Umrah, tawaf must be performed within a defined boundary. This area is described as the space between the Kaaba and Maqam Ibrahim.

However, due to modern crowd sizes, construction, and safety measures, it is not always possible for pilgrims to access that inner area. This raises a practical question: Does being further out invalidate the tawaf, or is there flexibility in such situations?

3. Islamic Ruling

According to Sayyid Sistani:

The preferred and standard requirement is to perform tawaf within the area between the Kaaba and Maqam Ibrahim.

However, if a person cannot access that area due to crowding, danger, or restriction:

• It is permissible to perform tawaf beyond that boundary, though one should not go too far and be as close as they can, where possible.
• The condition is that this is done out of necessity, not convenience.

Recognizing the crowd and safety concerns, Hadi and his wife decide not to force his way closer. Instead, they begin their tawaf from the outer circle. They complete all seven rounds with sincerity and focus. 

Hadi prioritizes safety for both himself and for others while maintaining the integrity of the ritual.
