On Eid, Every Heart Carries Something
Eid al-Adha has a feeling that’s hard to put into words. It’s joyful, but also deeply reflective. It’s the sound of takbir in the morning, families gathering, prayers filling the masjid, and hearts quietly carrying things only God knows about. Beneath the celebration, there’s something deeply personal about this day. For some, Eid arrives with gratitude and peace. For others, it comes with grief, unanswered du‘as, loneliness, or longing. And somehow, all of those feelings still belong here.
Imam Zayn al-Abidin (p) captures this beautifully in a supplication from Sahifa Sajjadiyya. He says, “O God, this is a special and blessed day, and the Muslims are gathered in it across the corners of Your land. Among them are those who ask, those who seek, those who desire, and those who fear, and You are the One who observes their needs…”(Sahifa Sajjadiyya)
There’s something comforting about knowing that on Eid, we’re not all standing before God in the same way. Some people are praying for healing. Some are begging for relief. Some are trying to hold onto faith. Others are simply exhausted. And God sees every one of them. He sees the person smiling in public but struggling inside. He sees the one making du‘a through tears. He sees the one who doesn’t even know what to ask for anymore.
That’s what makes Eid so special. We come to God as we are. Not perfect. Not with everything figured out. Just present. Just hopeful. Imam al-Sajjad (p) reminds us that God is fully aware of what every heart carries—and that nothing we ask of Him is difficult for Him to give. So on this Eid, bring your whole heart to Him. The joy, the worry, the gratitude, the pain. He is listening to all of it.
