WSID: Can I Eat at a Restaurant that Serves Alcohol?
Can I Eat at a Restaurant that Serves Alcohol?
- Details about the situation
Zahra is 26 years old and works as a graphic designer in Vancouver.
It’s Friday evening, and Zahra’s close group of Muslim friends decides to go out for dinner after a busy week. They chose a popular Mediterranean restaurant downtown. Everyone is excited for a chance to enjoy a meal together and catch up.
When Zahra arrives, she notices that alcohol is being served at other tables. Their own table has none, but the menu includes dishes cooked with wine and meats that are not halal.
As they begin to order, one of Zahra’s friends suggests, “Let’s just get the vegetarian platter to be safe.”
Zahra nods but still wonders to herself if it’s okay for them to eat here at all, even if none of them are drinking.
- Background
Living in diverse societies often means encountering environments where alcohol is present. The priority in such situations is ensuring that one does not compromise when it comes to the rules of God and being mindful of the environments you immerse yourself in, as well as what you consume.
Islam does not restrict believers from dining in such environments, but it requires awareness, responsibility, and intention.
- Ruling
Eating at a restaurant that serves alcohol is not haram by itself, as long as the food a person eats is halal and not najis (impure).
This means no pork, non-halal meat, or alcohol in the dish. If alcohol or impurity touches the food, it becomes haram to eat.
As a precaution, it is recommended to avoid places where alcohol is the main feature of the gathering (ex: bars, parties, or celebrations focused on drinking). The Ahlul Bayt (pbut) taught us not to behave in a manner that resembles those who drink.
Therefore, the ruling is: it is permissible to eat in such places, provided one’s food is halal and the environment does not promote or normalize impermissible behavior.
That being said, it would be best to choose a fully halal restaurant that has been verified, as it offers the believers contentment with regards to the meal that they eat and also supports local, Muslim-owned businesses in the community.
- Action
Zahra and her friends decide to stay mindful but relaxed. They double-check with the waiter to ensure none of their food contains alcohol, and they order vegetarian and seafood dishes that meet halal standards.
Throughout the dinner, they enjoy their time, laughing, reflecting, and talking about faith and life, all while maintaining their principles. No one orders alcohol, and they keep their gathering modest and respectful. They also make a commitment to visit a fully halal restaurant the next time they spend time with one another.
As they leave, Zahra feels content knowing that she was able to spend time with her friends while still upholding religious boundaries.
