What is your question?

I have a question about this ruling (1709) from the following Islamic Law by Sayed Sistani:
A person who observes a qadha for the fast of Ramadhan can break his fast before Zuhr. However, if the time for qadha fast is short, it is better not to break it.
So if I make up a qadha fast from Ramadhaan, I can break it before Dhuhr. Under what conditions can I break the fast before dhuhr? Does that count as the qadha fast or do I have to keep a full day fast on another day?

Answer

Yes, you may break a qadha (make-up) fast from the holy month of Ramadhan before dhuhr (the zenith or noon prayer). There are no conditions under which you would break the fast before dhuhr, the condition is that if you decide to break that fast, it must be done before dhuhr. It is not counted as a complete fast and you must still make-up the missed day of the month of Ramadhan.

What is your question?

In Edmonton, Alberta, Canada the fasting time is very long, about 18 hours and 50 minutes. What is the fatwa for the following people: a) Girls of 10 -12 years old. Should they keep these long fasts?
b) Old people who find it difficult to keep long fasts. Can they open their fasts earlier, say after 15 or 16 hours?

Answer

Your answers:
a. Yes, they should keep their fast. If unable due to extreme hardships or harm then they may break their fast by drinking or eating in as much as will remove the hardship. However, they must make-up the fast. If this is a daily issue then one must try to move to another location of residence where one can fast the month.
b. No, it is not permissible to do so, unless per above answer to (a).

What is your question?

I have broke one day of fasting in Ramadhan (by masturbating) , and I want to pay Kaffarah.
I want to pay my Kaffarah by feeding 60 poor, and now I live in the U.S. So how much kilograms of wheat or bread should I give to the poor, and does it have to be a Shia poor or it does not matter ?
Also is there a way pay my Kaffarah in U.S dollars to some organization who will feed 60 poors instead of me ?

Answer

Masturbation is haram (forbidden).
As for the kaffarah it is $300 per day (1 mud (0.75 kg) of food (rice, dates, wheat, raisins, bread, etc.) per person). It should be paid primarily to a Muslim believer. You may pay it online at:

What is your question?

The Sayed at the mosque I go to had been saying (on more than one occasion) for the few days of Ramadan that Eid will be on Thursday inshallah. So on Thursday. I went to the mosque to attend the Eid prayers after I broke my fast in the morning (due to the lack of knowledge of having to wait until the prayer) only to find out that the Eid is on Friday. No signs were posted on the mosque's gate and no emails or phone calls notifying us. They claimed that an email had gone out but I had not received it. I'm not trying to send the wrong message about anyone in that mosque. I love everyone there they all are like my brothers.
My concern is what do I have to do about the Thursday that I intentionally broke my fast. Is it just simply make it up?

Answer

Yes, simply make-up the fast. If you truly did so without knowledge and unintentionally then no Kaffarah is required.

What is your question?

Assalam Alaikum, is it permissible that one can take pain killer tablets during the fasting?
